Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front commonly known as
JKLF, was formed in Birmingham, UK on May 29, 1977.
Within a couple of years of formation of JKLF, its branches were established, besides in different cities and towns of the UK, in different countries of Europe, in USA and in different countries of the Middle East.
In 1982 its branches were established in Azad Kashmir and Pakistan and in 1987 in Indian held Kashmir. Organisationally, JKLF is divided into three zones i.e. Indian occupied Jammu Kashmir (IHK) Zone, Azad Kashmir Gilgit-Baltistan (AKGB) Zone and UK Zone, while all other branches in USA, Europe, Middle East and Far East are directly controlled by the Central leadership.
Its headquarters were temporarily shifted to Azad Kashmir in 1987 and are to be shifted to Srinagar when circumstances allow.
History:
The recorded history of Kashmir goes back to about 2000 BC.
2. For about three quarters of its history, Kashmir has been an independent State though its area has been expanding and shrinking.
3. The rule of Lalita Ditya (715-752 AD), a famous Hindu ruler of Kashmir, is considered the Golden period of pre-Muslim era Kashmir whereas that of Sultan Zainul Abedin - The Budshah (1420-1470 AD) is known as the Golden Era of the entire Kashmir history.
At present JKLF is established in all the Districts and Tehsils of Azad Kashmir, in Gilgit, Diamer and Skardu Districts of Gilgit-Baltistan and in the main cities of Pakistan. In Indian occupied Kashmir, things have not been running smoothly. In August 1990 almost the entire JKLF leadership was arrested, in Sept. 1995 Yasin Malik and some of his associates revolted against the Central Organisation and floated a parallel group. In March 1996, 37 JKLF members comprising almost the entire leadership of the political and militant wings of JKLF in IHK were killed by Indian armed forces. It took quite some time to re-establish the zonal organisation after this catastrophe. Our UK zonal organisation, despite having been disturbed by defections several times, is well established with over 20 units throughout the country. We have branches in Holland, Belgium, France, Germany, Denmark, Norway and Sweden though not very active. Our branch in New York has been quite active, staging demos outside the UN headquarters every now and then. Our branches in Gulf States (Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Kuwait and Oman) and Hong Kong have been helping the organisation financially.
